How to Test Golf Cart Batteries and Find a Bad Battery

When a golf cart loses range, climbs slowly, needs frequent charging or feels weak under acceleration, test the battery system before replacing parts. Identify the battery type, fully charge and rest the pack, measure total and individual voltage, and compare performance under load. A normal resting voltage does not prove that a battery still has useful capacity, so the process must also consider the charger, cables, connections and BMS.

Before Testing: Identify the Battery Type and Pack Layout

Confirm the voltage and chemistry shown on the labels. Common arrangements include six 6V batteries for a 36V cart, six 8V or four 12V batteries for a 48V cart, and an integrated LiFePO4 pack.

Wear eye protection and remove metal jewelry. Do not test a cracked, leaking, badly swollen or unusually hot battery.

How to Test Golf Cart Batteries With a Multimeter

Use a digital multimeter set to DC voltage. If you need help selecting the ports or dial setting, follow this step-by-step battery multimeter guide.

  1. Fully charge the battery bank with the correct charger.
  2. Turn the cart off and disconnect charging sources.
  3. Let the batteries rest before measuring. Trojan recommends at least six hours, preferably 24 hours, for an accurate open-circuit voltage test.
  4. Measure the complete pack from the main positive to the main negative terminal.
  5. On a series-connected lead-acid bank, measure each 6V, 8V or 12V battery separately.
  6. Number the batteries and record every reading under the same conditions.

When you test golf cart batteries with a multimeter, differences within the same bank are often more useful than one isolated number. Recharge and retest a low battery before deciding that it has failed.

Golf Cart Battery Voltage: How to Read the Results

Golf cart battery voltage depends on chemistry, recent charging, temperature and whether it was measured at rest or under load. Compare 6V, 8V and 12V lead-acid batteries with the correct manufacturer chart. A 48V lead-acid bank and a 51.2V LiFePO4 pack also have different ranges.

Do not treat nominal voltage as a full-charge reading. A battery labeled 8V normally measures above 8.0V when fully charged, while a 51.2V LiFePO4 pack may approach a much higher charging voltage. Read more about 48V vs 51.2V golf cart batteries.

Voltage provides a first check. Because LiFePO4 has a flat discharge curve, accurate health assessment may also require load, capacity and BMS data.

How to Load Test Golf Cart Batteries

A weak battery can show acceptable voltage at rest and collapse when the motor demands current. U.S. Battery notes that load testing can identify a bad battery when other checks do not.

Measure and record resting voltage, apply a controlled battery load or a safe normal operating load, and record voltage again while the load is present. After removing the load, observe how the voltage recovers. Compare all batteries under the same conditions.

Avoid using one universal voltage-drop limit for every battery. Acceptable results depend on battery voltage, capacity, age, temperature, load current and manufacturer specifications.

How to Tell Which Golf Cart Battery Is Bad

Combine the results instead of relying on one measurement:

  • One battery remains lower after a full charge and rest: possible weak or damaged battery.
  • One battery drops faster than the others under equal load: likely capacity loss or increased internal resistance.
  • All batteries are low: check charger output and charging time before replacing the bank.
  • Battery voltage is normal but cart voltage is low: inspect terminals, cables and connections for voltage drop.
  • A lithium pack has no output: review the BMS display, app or fault log for undervoltage, overcurrent or temperature protection.
  • The pack charges normally but runtime is short: perform a controlled capacity test.

FAQs About Golf Cart Battery Testing

Can I replace only one bad battery in an older lead-acid set?

It is sometimes possible, but a new battery may not operate evenly with older units. Compare the age, capacity, voltage and load results of the entire bank. If several are weak, replacing the set is usually more consistent.

Can different brands, ages or capacities be used in the same battery bank?

Mixing batteries can create uneven charging, voltage and usable capacity. Series-connected batteries should normally have matching chemistry, voltage, capacity and similar age. Follow the battery manufacturer’s instructions before combining products.

Do I need a new charger when converting from lead-acid to LiFePO4?

Usually yes. The charger must match the LiFePO4 pack’s actual charging voltage, current and termination requirements. A charger labeled only “48V” is not automatically suitable for a 51.2V LiFePO4 battery.
