Lead Acid Battery vs Lithium Ion: Differences & How to Choose

Lead acid batteries usually cost less upfront. Lithium-ion batteries can offer more usable energy, lower weight and longer cycle life. Which option makes sense depends on your daily workload, charging system and budget.

For RVs, solar storage and industrial equipment, the choice often comes down to lead acid vs LiFePO4. LiFePO4, or lithium iron phosphate, is a lithium-ion chemistry. This guide focuses on it; other lithium batteries have different limits.

Lead Acid vs Lithium Batteries at a Glance

What mattersLead acidLiFePO4
Purchase priceUsually lowerUsually higher
Usable energyMore sensitive to heavy loadsGenerally holds capacity better under load
WeightUsually heavier for equivalent usable energyUsually lighter
Cycle lifeDeep cycling can shorten lifeGenerally supports more cycles
ChargingFull recharge includes a slower absorption stageCan charge faster with suitable equipment
MaintenanceFlooded types need watering; AGM does notNo watering; connections still need checks

These are general trends, illustrated in Power-Sonic’s battery comparison. Actual results depend on the models and operating conditions.

For a sealed lead-acid battery vs lithium-ion comparison, remember that AGM is already a sealed lead-acid technology. Replacing AGM with lithium therefore offers no watering advantage; usable energy, weight and cycle life become more relevant.

Lead acid battery weight also affects handling and vehicle payload. Compare complete packs sized for the same usable energy, and check mounting needs. A lighter replacement may free up payload, but must still meet your load and installation requirements.

Why the Same 100Ah Rating Can Deliver Different Runtime

Amp-hours alone do not tell you how long equipment will run. Start with an estimate:

Usable energy (Wh) ≈ nominal voltage × capacity (Ah) × planned depth of discharge.

For illustration, assume a 50% discharge window for lead acid and 80% for LiFePO4:

  • 12V 100Ah lead acid: 12 × 100 × 0.50 = 600Wh.
  • 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4: 12.8 × 100 × 0.80 = 1,024Wh.

At a constant 100W load, that suggests about 6 hours versus 10.2 hours before losses. These are assumed discharge windows, not fixed limits or test results. Temperature, age, discharge rate, inverter losses and system cutoffs affect actual runtime.

Our 12.8V 100Ah LiFePO4 battery lists 1,280Wh of nominal energy and a 100A maximum continuous discharge current. Both figures matter: enough stored energy does not guarantee enough current for your equipment.

For a portable fridge battery, include compressor startup demand and measured daily energy use. A fridge cycles on and off, so its nameplate watts alone cannot predict overnight runtime.

When Is Lithium Worth the Higher Upfront Cost?

LiFePO4 is worth a closer look when batteries cycle daily, weight limits payload, or charging downtime stops work. A solar battery used each evening has a different cost calculation from a backup battery used only rarely.

Compare total costs over the same period: battery purchase, charger changes, installation, maintenance and expected replacements. Then check whether the extra usable energy actually benefits your application. Paying for capacity you rarely use may offer little return.

Lead acid can remain sensible where initial budget matters most, use is infrequent and the existing system already meets runtime needs. For industrial fleets, our lithium vs lead-acid forklift battery comparison looks at shift patterns and operating costs. Forklifts also need approved battery weight for stability.

Before accepting a lifespan claim, request its test conditions: depth of discharge, temperature, charge rate and remaining capacity at end of life. A cycle count alone does not establish years of service or warranty coverage.

What Should You Check Before Replacing Lead Acid with Lithium?

A matching “12V” label does not confirm compatibility. Check these points before ordering:

  1. Voltage and charging. Match the equipment’s voltage range and each charging source to the pack. Check the mains charger, solar controller and alternator setup. Lead-acid equalization modes may be unsuitable. A pack that accepts more charge current will not refill faster if your charger or solar array cannot supply it.
  2. Current and protection. Confirm continuous current, startup surge and surge duration. Check the battery management system (BMS) limits; a protective shutdown can stop equipment even when energy remains.
  3. Temperature. Charging and discharging have different limits. The SAFTEC 100Ah model above lists charging at 0–50°C and discharging at −20–60°C. Other packs differ: Victron’s Lithium Smart manual specifies a 5°C minimum charging setting. Follow the selected pack’s limits.
  4. Fit and installation. Verify dimensions, terminals, mounting, cable and fuse ratings, plus permission for any series or parallel connection. Lower weight is useful only when the installation remains suitable.

FAQs About Lead Acid and Lithium Batteries

Are deep cycle batteries the same as lithium batteries?

No. “Deep cycle” describes batteries designed for repeated deep discharge and recharge. Both lead acid and lithium can serve that role. When comparing deep cycle lithium-ion batteries, check chemistry, usable capacity and current ratings.

Are AGM batteries lighter than lead-acid batteries?

AGM batteries are lead-acid batteries. Weight varies by model and capacity; compare actual specifications rather than treating AGM as a separate chemistry.

Do lithium batteries have acid?

They do not use the sulfuric acid electrolyte found in lead-acid batteries. They still contain electrolyte and require suitable protection, handling and disposal.
