How many watts does a refrigerator draw? There is no single number. A household refrigerator may draw roughly 100–800W while actively cooling. Compact models are usually at the lower end; large, feature-rich units may use more. The compressor can also demand a brief startup surge.
For backup planning, separate power from energy. Running and starting watts determine whether an inverter works; daily kWh determines battery capacity. Check the label, EnergyGuide data or measured consumption before selecting equipment.

Average refrigerator wattage can be misleading because rated, running and starting watts describe different conditions:
- Rated watts come from the specification or nameplate.
- Running watts are drawn while cooling components operate.
- Starting watts are the brief compressor-starting surge.
A 200W refrigerator does not necessarily consume 4.8kWh daily because it may not draw 200W continuously. Defrost heaters, fans and ice makers also create changing loads. An inverter sized only from running watts may fail during startup.
How to Calculate Refrigerator Power Consumption
To determine how much electricity a fridge uses, start with data for the actual model.
1. Check the label. Look for volts, amps, watts and frequency. If watts are absent, estimate:
Watts = Volts × Amps
Label current may represent rated input rather than normal compressor draw, so it is not a guaranteed daily average. Our watts-to-amps calculator helps with conversion.
2. Read the EnergyGuide figure. Annual kWh is more useful for estimating electricity consumption:
Daily kWh = Annual kWh ÷ 365
For example, 400kWh per year equals about 1.10kWh per day. It does not mean a constant 46W; it is annual energy averaged over time. The U.S. Department of Energy offers a model-based rating tool, and ENERGY STAR lists certified models and annual use.
3. Measure real use. A plug-in meter can record running watts, peak draw and cumulative kWh. Measure for at least 24 hours and note room temperature, settings and normal door use.

What Size Backup Power Is Needed for a Refrigerator?
To determine what size generator, inverter or home battery can run a fridge, check two separate ratings.
First, continuous and surge output determine whether the system can start and run the refrigerator. Add simultaneous loads. A generator that powers a refrigerator alone may be undersized after adding a freezer, pump or lighting. Confirm compressor startup from the manual or measurement instead of applying one multiplier.
Second, usable battery energy determines runtime:
Required usable energy = Refrigerator daily kWh × Backup days
A refrigerator using 1.10kWh daily needs 2.20kWh of delivered energy for two days. The battery must store more because usable-capacity limits and inverter losses reduce delivery. Include other protected appliances.
