USB Types Explained: How to Identify Ports, Cables and Symbols

Two identical USB-C ports can support different functions. This guide separates connector shape, data standard and power capability, then explains common USB types, SS and other symbols.

USB Connector Type, Version and Function Are Different

A connector name describes physical shape. USB-A, USB-B, Micro-USB and USB-C tell you which plug fits, not its full performance.

A USB-C port may operate at USB 2.0 speed, while another supports USB4, video and USB Power Delivery. Shape alone cannot confirm these features. USB-IF guidance separates USB Type-C from data standards and USB Power Delivery.

How to Identify USB Types by Connector Shape

First, compare the plug or port shape.

Standard USB-B is often called a printer connector. A wider, two-part Micro-B appeared on USB 3.x external drives. Mini and Micro remain on legacy equipment.

What Do SS, Numbers, Colors and USB Symbols Mean?

The three-pronged symbol identifies USB but not its speed. On older products, SS means SuperSpeed and commonly marks 5Gbps; SS10 indicates up to 10Gbps.

Current USB-IF branding shows the rate directly: USB 5Gbps, 10Gbps, 20Gbps, 40Gbps or 80Gbps. A certified speed logo is more useful than connector shape, although it states a maximum signaling rate, not guaranteed file-transfer performance.

A battery symbol may mark a port that remains powered while a computer sleeps. A lightning-bolt logo can identify Thunderbolt, but manufacturers also use similar power icons. Check the manual before assuming a symbol confirms charging, video or Thunderbolt.

Color is less reliable. Blue often suggests USB 3.x, while red or yellow may indicate charging or a vendor-specific feature. Colors vary by brand, so verify the logo and specification.

How to Check Data, Charging and Video Capabilities

Use the following order when a port or cable is unclear:

  1. Identify the connector shape so the cable will physically fit.
  2. Look for a speed label such as 5Gbps or 10Gbps.
  3. Check the device manual for data, charging, video or Thunderbolt support.
  4. Confirm the cable rating and connected device’s capabilities.

Every component matters. A high-speed port with a USB 2.0 cable operates at the slower supported rate. USB-C does not automatically support video, and USB PD works only when the source, device and cable are compatible.

USB PD can deliver up to 240W in a compatible implementation, not from every USB-C port. The USB-IF Power Delivery overview explains that devices negotiate the power required.

Choosing USB Outputs for a Custom Battery Product

For a battery-powered product, the connector is only the visible part. The output module converts battery voltage to USB output, while the BMS, wiring, thermal design and enclosure must support the load.

Project requirements should define:

  • USB-A, USB-C or both;
  • required voltage, wattage and PD profiles;
  • number of ports and combined output under simultaneous use;
  • charging-only or charging-and-data operation;
  • input, output or bidirectional use;
  • port position, environmental protection and covers;
  • other DC, AC, communication or charging connections.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there an official USB Type-D connector?

No. USB Type-D is not a standard connector category defined by USB-IF. Established families include Type-A, Type-B, Mini, Micro and Type-C. Check any product described as “USB-D” against its manufacturer documentation.

Why do some USB cables charge but not transfer data?

Some cables contain only the conductors needed for power. Others support data at a limited rate. A connector may fit even when the cable lacks the wiring or electronics for the expected function.

Can an adapter add USB Power Delivery to an older port?

Not by itself. An adapter changes connector shape but cannot create USB PD capability or power the source hardware does not support. The source, controller, cable and receiving device must be compatible.

Can a USB port remain powered when the main device is switched off?

Yes, if the product has an always-on power path and suitable control logic. Because this creates standby consumption, the behavior should be defined during electrical and battery-system design.
