What Size Battery Do I Need to Run a 12V Fridge?

By Haijiang Lai

A 12V fridge does not automatically need a 100Ah battery. Size it from daily energy use and runtime without sufficient charging. A 360Wh/day fridge needs at least 35.2Ah for one day, 70.3Ah for two days or 105.5Ah for three days from a 12.8V LiFePO4 battery, using an 80% planned usable fraction. Select a capacity above the result. The method applies to portable, car, camping, solar and off-grid refrigerators or freezers.

How to Calculate the Battery Size for a 12V Fridge or Freezer

Find Daily Energy Consumption

Use the manufacturer’s Wh per 24 hours figure or measure a representative day. Do not multiply maximum compressor wattage by 24 because it cycles on and off. Freezer mode, ambient temperature, ventilation and door openings affect consumption.

If your data is in watts or amps, first see 12V Fridge Power Consumption: Watts, Amps & Ah per Day.

Define the Required Runtime

Decide how long the fridge must run without sufficient charging: overnight, through cloudy weather, in a parked vehicle or at an off-grid site. Add other loads sharing the battery.

Apply the Formula

Required Battery Ah =
(Daily Energy Use in Wh × Runtime in Days)
÷ Battery Rated Voltage
÷ Planned Usable Fraction

For a 360Wh/day fridge running for two days:

360Wh × 2 ÷ 12.8V ÷ 0.80 = 70.3Ah

The 80% figure is a planning assumption, not a universal LiFePO4 limit. Usable capacity depends on the battery, BMS settings, temperature and service-life target. A 70.3Ah result means choosing the next suitable capacity above it.

12V Fridge and Freezer Battery Size Chart

This chart assumes a 12.8V LiFePO4 battery, 80% planned usable capacity, no sufficient charging during the stated runtime and no other loads.

480Wh46.9Ah93.8Ah140.6Ah
600Wh58.6Ah117.2Ah175.8Ah

These are calculated minimums, not universal purchase recommendations. Use measured consumption and round upward. For an existing 100Ah battery, see How Long Will a 100Ah Battery Run a 12V Fridge?.

What Changes in a 24V System?

For the same 360Wh/day load and two-day runtime, a 25.6V LiFePO4 system needs 35.2Ah instead of 70.3Ah at 12.8V. Both provide about 900Wh. A 24V system needs half the Ah, not half the energy. All components must be voltage-compatible; never connect a 12V-only appliance to 25.6V.

How Do Fridge Type and Charging Method Affect Battery Size?

The formula stays the same, but each application changes the inputs:

ApplicationConditions to include
Portable/car fridgeParked runtime, alternator charging, cable drop and vehicle loads
Camping fridge/freezerOff-grid time, shared loads and available charging
Solar/off-grid refrigeratorNight use, low sun and daily energy recovery
FreezerLower setpoint, initial pull-down and ambient heat
Remote refrigerationLonger autonomy and limited maintenance access

Battery capacity determines runtime; solar panels, alternators and AC chargers determine energy recovery. A 12V fridge solar setup must power the live load and recharge the battery under realistic sunlight and losses. Solar-panel sizing is a separate calculation.

The best battery for a camping fridge or car fridge meets the energy need while matching the appliance, charging method and conditions.

What to Check Before Selecting the Final Battery System

Calculated Ah is only the starting point. Before selecting a 12V fridge battery or portable fridge battery pack, confirm:

  • Voltage range, measured Wh/day and required autonomy;
  • Compressor startup and maximum current;
  • BMS continuous and peak-current ratings;
  • Low-voltage cutoff and usable capacity;
  • Built-in/external construction and space;
  • Cable length, connectors and fuse;
  • Solar, alternator, DC-DC or AC interface;
  • PMU or MPPT compatibility;
  • Operating temperature, certification and quantity.

These checks prevent an adequate Ah rating from failing through voltage drop, current limits, temperature or poor fit.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will a Higher-Ah Battery Damage a 12V Fridge?

No. More Ah stores more energy; it does not force extra current into the fridge. Voltage, polarity and connections must still match.

Can I Connect Two 12V Batteries in Parallel for Longer Runtime?

Yes, if their chemistry, voltage, capacity, condition and protection are compatible. Follow the manufacturer’s parallel-connection limits.

Can the Battery Charge While Powering the Fridge?

Yes, if the charger, BMS and wiring allow it. The source supplies the fridge first; only remaining output charges the battery.

Should a Car Fridge Use the Starter Battery or a Separate Battery?

For extended parked use, an auxiliary battery protects the starter battery. Use suitable isolation, fusing, cables and charging.
